Bee Challenge!
1750 Dayton Rd. Chico, CA 95928
Dear Beekeeper,
Project Apis m. (or PAm) is a nonprofit organization founded in 2006 to fund and direct research to improve the health and vitality of managed honey bee colonies.
PAm has brought a “New Vision” to beekeeping research. Beekeepers and growers are collaborating under PAm’s umbrella to solve the challenges of pollinating crops. PAm is working on several different fronts to solve Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). Since its inception, PAm has contributed $350,000 to key research projects at several of the nation’s top institutions in seven states. This funding has been leveraged to obtain another $350,000 in grants thereby doubling PAm’s commitment to bee research. PAm’s successes include The Bee Pathogen Chip and the Integrated Virus Detection System, technologies borrowed from human health. PAm operates with low overhead and a responsive structure.
“PAm is the best thing that’s come forth for the beekeeping industry in a long time”, says Kim Flottum, editor of Bee Culture.
“PAm is strengthening our industry” explains Jerry Hayes, Florida’s Chief Apiarist.
“PAm is a highly effective organization. Incredibly dynamic”, states John Miller, California and North Dakota beekeeper.
Crop pollination is a significant industry, 15% of input costs to grow a pound of almonds are in pollination fees. The value of pollination services to almonds alone roughly equals the value of the entire U.S. honey crop. In recent meetings with almond growers and beekeepers, PAm found almond growers anxious to match beekeeper contributions to PAm and beekeepers willing to match almond grower contributions for bee research conducted by PAm. Join in the Bee Challenge! This is your economic call to action to support pollination. Show your growers you are making a contribution to PAm and ask for their matched support. Whatever you contribute, ask your grower to provide a match based upon the number of colonies he rents. Show your commitment to the future of our industries and to honey bee research!
